I began production professionally as Maura Smyth ceramics 5 years ago. I entered the wonderful world of pottery as a mature enthusiast. Over my 13 years as a primary school teacher I have experienced the thrill that comes from creating work with clay. In recent years it has become a continuing obsession to explore the endless meandering permutations and possibilities that can be created with clay as a base material.
From initial conceptualisation, each piece is created in my home-based studio in Warrenpoint, Co. Down.
Most of my work is created intuitively. I attempt to produce work that is fresh and spontaneous. The surface decoration and texture complements the body. My work is hand-built and I use minimal tools allowing me to connect with the clay. The longer that I am in this field the more I learn, it is an on-going process of exploration.
I hope that you enjoy exploring my site.
